The Ontario District of LWML-Canada held their 30th convention in Sarnia, Ontario June 10-12, 2010. Theme of the convention was “I am the bridge: generation to generation.” A total of 209 registered.
In electing an executive for the coming triennium the voting body re-elected the following: president, Fran Van Vorst; vice-president for education and mission inspiration, Anna Gruber; vice-president for mission grants and mission service, Carolyn McLeod; recording secretary, Doris E. Schaeffer; corresponding secretary, Diane M. Ebert; and financial secretary, June Williams. Previously appointed vice-president for communications, Janice Buchner was this time elected. Newly elected is treasurer, Linda C. Schappert.
Those attending the convention brought many “gifts of love” for Neighbour Link, begun in 1990 to help Canadian churches connect with their community—sheets, pillowcases, blankets and other bedding for families in need. Christ Lutheran Church in Sarnia has been active for many years. VP for Communication, Janice Buchner, reports that Neighbour Link representative. Liz Doswell, was overwhelmed by the bedding donations and money raised through donations ($530).The district adopted a mission grant and work program goal of $127,167. The following projects will receive mission grantsduring the coming triennium. Our delgates adopted a Mission Grants goal of $62,000.00
The following projects, God-willing, will be funded over the next three years: funding to purchase French Language hymnals for the Lutheran Church in Haiti, $ 8,000; support for the Ministry of Missionary Joseph Alfazema, Sofala, Mozambique $ 5,000; assistance in the purchase of construction materials and labour costs for building a worship centre in Santiago, Dominican Republic $ 4,000; shipping costs for one container of goods to Haiti $10,000; classroom dormitory furniture and equipment for Concordia Seminary, Odessa, Ukraine, $10,000; assistance in the continued ministry of the Urdu mission started at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Hamilton, Ontario, $ 8,000; support for the purchase of a mini bus for the Sudanese ministry in Ontario, $ 11,000; children’s ministry among new immigrants at Trinity, Toronto, $ 6,000.
Forty ladies registered, but 90 people participated walk for missions along the St. Clair River. To date $1,450 has been collected. The money will be used to assist Javed Kahn’s ministry among muslims in the Windsor / Essex area and by Windsor Essex County Lutheran Outreach (WELCO).
